OS6 on Ultra 6: Communication Error

I did something bad on my update route to 6.10.2. So far I have tried Factory Reset, USB recovery tool, OS reinstall - no luck with OS6 "Communication Error", on OS4 just the first screen. After reading through the forum I would guess I somehow did something to the EEPROM. I have access to a second one, and could create an array on that. I was able to use it to boot up, but I cant see model in interface. So I guess a factory restore on that array would create the same issue again.

*I tried an factory restore on that array I created and it ended up with an hung OS4.

  • The NAS OS uses a file named vpd that's in flash memory to determine the model and serial number, and it sounds like yours is corrupt.  It's an encrypted file that only Netgear can re-create and is one of few things a USB recovery can't fix.  If you were to copy that from one NAS to another, assuming they really are the same model, then that might fix it.  Of course, the problem could be deeper in that the flash memory is damaged.  If it does work, one limitation is you'll see both units displaying the same serial number.  Not really a big problem unless you want to use both with ReadyCloud, as that requires a unique (and proper) serial number.

Its seem like thats correct in RAIDar I can see that both name and serial is corrupted.

I will try to get it via shell from the other one.
