Please suggest the best readyNAS unit for this hard drive

I am going to buy two 3 TB Constellation® ES.2 Hard Drives (model number: ST33000651NS).

These drives come with SED (self encryption). Other than that this drive is identical to the ST33000650NS which is on the HCL. If I've done my research right, the encryption doesn't affect anything and the drive will be compatible. I am getting the drive+encryption because it is significantly cheaper... most likely due to a hard to satisfy demand for the un-encrypted drive due to the very unfortunate flood in Thailand.

In the future, when the prices fall, I will purchase 4 more of the same drive. So obviously I want a 6-bay enclosure.

TL;DR:
What 6-bay enclosure will best suite six 3 TB drives whose interface is SATA 6 GB/s?
I've confirmed that my Mac's NIC and network can handle gigabit speeds and I want to eliminate any bottlenecks between the drives and the devices accessing the data.
My intuition is that the Ultra 6 or 6+ will handle the 3 TB SATA 6 GB/s drives. Is that correct or do I need to spend even more for one of the business class readyNAS units?

  • First - you have it backwards. You choose the best NAS to fit your needs, and then choose the drives to populate it.

Second - are you sure of the model number? I can find references to an ST33000650NS (Constellation) and an ST33000651AS (Barracuda XT). Both have 5 year warranties, but only the Constellation ST33000650NS has the rotational vibration safeguard. Both are on most of the x-86 Hardware Compatibility Lists (HCL).

There are basically 9 models of ReadyNAS that have this drive on their HCL. Everything from the Ultra 2 (2 bay, $320 diskless on Newegg) to the Pro 6 (6 bay, $980 diskless on Newegg).

Would not recommend getting drives that aren't on the compatibility list. They may have compatibility issues and you will be denied support if you have issues with these drives.
  • Thanks a lot for your replies PapaBear and mdgm. I will return the ST33000651NS drives if I end up having compatibility issues and will get the nearly identical ST33000650NS instead (which is on the HCL). But regardless of compatibility my real question was if any of the NAS units would be bottle-necking a 3 TB SATA 6 GB/s hard drive. I have my eyes on the Ultra 6 or 6+ as I am just a prosumer. But if you tell me that I will see a noticeable increase with a business class then I might make the leap. The reason I thought to ask is because the drives I am getting are 3 TB and SATA 6 GB/s instead of a more standard desktop drive that's 500GB and SATA 3 GB/s... I just want the flashy drives I'm spending the extra bucks for to not be bottle-necked because I didn't go business class.

    TL;DR:
If one of you could confirm that a 3 TB SATA 6 GB/s drive (on the HCL) would operate at the same or close enough to the same speed in a Ultra 6/6+ vs a business class NAS that's all I need to hear!
Sorry for the lack of expertise on my part. I feel like this is a question I should be able to answer confidently on my own but I get a gut feeling that at my level of knowledge I might be missing something.

    [Edit]
PapaBear, you said you couldn't find the drive I mentioned. Just in case you were curious, I decided to add links to the product pages for the two drives in question. Just for your own info is all.
    1. Here's the drive that's on the HCL: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=6a0505f79edac210VgnVCM1000001a48090aRCRD

    2. Here's the drive I bought that is not on the HCL: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=b0942191077ec210VgnVCM1000001a48090aRCRD

Drive speed is not the bottleneck. I believe the units you're looking at have SATA II, but SATA III disks will work in them.

Pro 6 is faster than Ultra 6 Plus is faster than Ultra 6. This is due to the speeds of the CPUs in these units. CPU Specs of the ReadyNAS

If you want fastest speed go with the Pro 6.

There are performance figures on readynas.com. Take a look at them and decide what you want.
  • Alright that settles it then I'll go for the Pro. Thanks sincerely for all the help.
