Power loss during file transfer

Hi - I'm a brand new user - and just purchased and set up my first NAS for home use...

Question:  I was transferring the contents of my music library from an external harddrive to ReadyNAS via USB cable.  It's about 1 TB of data - and 12 hours into the transfer - the power went out ever so briefly - but caused everything to reboot.

I have no idea how much remaining data still needs to be transferred over... if I start the copy all over again - will it duplicate existing files or give me the option to skip those?  Or is there a better approach to address this situation?

Thank you.

  • If it were my data, I would verify the integrity of the source data on the USB drive, then wipe all that was copied to the NAS and start again. Next you should look into getting a UPS. Power interrupts can actually kill your NAS file system and give you a whole world of pain. Ian

That depends on how you were you doing the copy.

BTW, if you were doing drag+drop from a PC you would get better performance by hooking up the USB drive to the PC.  Otherwise the data gets pulled to the PC from the NAS and pushed out again from the PC back to the NAS.

If you are copying from a PC, then a utility that can verify (or  at least resume) would be the best approach.  Teracopy for instance.
