Presales configuration question (104 and 314)
Hi all
Hoping someone can give some advice.
Because over the past few years the price of DLink 320 NAS enclosures have been so cheap i've foolishly amassed four of these things on my desktop:
1: 2 x 2Tb (RAID 1)
2: 2 x 2Tb (RAID 1)
3: 2 x 2Tb (RAID 1)
4: 2 x 3Tb (RAID 1)
They are all 2 bay units and I just kept buying new ones when I ran out of space.
Now, i'm looking at either a 104 or a 314 as I want to get rid of the 4 boxes I have and possibly have a performance increase and obtain more space with a RAID 5 setup.
My main question is that if I buy a Netgear and put 2 new 3Tb drives in it, configure it, then copy the files from Box 4 to the Netgear setup. Can I then take those 2 drives out of Box 4 and put them into the Netgear and achieve a RAID 5 setup giving me 9Gb?
Also, the 3Tb drives I have are 5940rpm drives. Can I add them to 7200rpm drives without issue?
I use my NAS primarily as a media streamer and as my backup from the computers and laptops in the house so would there be much advantage of me buying the 314 over the 104 apart from an increase in file transfer speed? I'm assuming even the 104 is a better unit than my dlink 320's and they do the job just fine.
Also, total newbie question, is RAID 5 every bit as safe/secure as RAID 1.
Thanks
Dene

Go with the 314. It's much more powerful than the 104 and I think you would be much happier with it.deno wrote:

Yes. Well it would be around 8.1 TiB. Before putting the 3TB drives from the old NAS in the ReadyNAS connect the drives up to a PC and delete the partitions off them (do not format them as the NAS will do this).deno wrote:

Yes.deno wrote:

The 314 has 2GB RAM vs 512MB RAM in the 104. The 314 has an Intel Atom CPU which is much, much faster than the ARM CPU in the 104. The 314 also has a HDMI port which is there for possible future use, but can already be of use for some troubleshooting (if required). If you want to run apps the extra RAM in the 314 will be of great benefit.deno wrote:

With 4 disks RAID-5 protects you against any 1 disk failing. With two disks RAID 1 protects you against any 1 disk failing. Of course RAID-1 is thus perhaps a little safer, but not much. Two disks failing in a RAID 5 array isn't very likely but it is possible. I like RAID-6 (protects against two disk failures) but that does require a minimum of four disks to be installed before creating the volume so it sounds like this doesn't suit you.
Of course RAID isn't a replacement for backups (see the link in my sig), there are problems that RAID cannot protect you against. - deno1AspirantBrilliant reply, Thank you!!
So, when I put the 2 x 3Tb in my new Netgear box, do I specify RAID 5 (or 6) configuration then and once all my data is transferred to those 2 drives, just add my partition-deleted drives into the box and it will just do the rest?
Thanks again
Dene - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou have to have 4 disks installed to create a RAID-6 volume. I would just stick with the default X-RAID volume (uses RAID-5).
