Question on Ultra 6 (first time user)

I am considering purchasing the Ultra 6 (RNDU6000) with 6 3TB Seagate drives (ST33000651AS).
Having never owned a Readynas product, I had some questions:

Usage: file serving to PCs and Macs, iTunes server, video storage, photo storage in home environment (currently I am using 11TB in a JBOD)

Questions:
1. With 6 3TB drives using RAID5, will I see ~15TB of available disk space? Can 15TB be allocated or is there a limitation?
2. Are Seagate ST33000651AS good drives for the NAS (they are on the compatibility list)? If not, which 3TB drives?
3. Are there any issues with performance when using Apple AFP?
4. Is there any advantage on getting Ultra 6 Plus?
5. Any problems to watch out for?

Thanks
Boris

  • 1. Actually with single redundancy, you will see about 13.5TB of volume. (5x2.7TB after overhead and 1000/1024 conversion)
    2. They seem to have a good rating. You might want to look at the Hitachi HDS723030ALA640. It has the rotation vibration safeguard where the Seagate does not. The Seagate does have a 5 year warranty and the Hitachi a 3 year warranty. This Hitachi is listed on Newegg and several other sites by it P/N of 0S03086 rather than the drive model number. I have 2 x HDS5C3030ALA630 (P/N 0S03230 for OEM and 0S03228 for Retail boxing) and they have been running for almost 3 months with no problems. These are the 5400 RPM "Green" drives, but I have not noticed much difference between them and 7200 RPM drives in my NVX. However, my NVX file transfer rate is between 55 and 75 MB/s and a Pro 6 would be hitting the max for a gigabit connection of 100+ MB/s.
    3. Since I am all Windows and have AFP disabled, I cannot say.
    4. Faster Processor if you are going to be running a lot of add-ons. If you are using it just as a standard file server, maybe not so much.
    5. Jealousy of your friends. :D
