Questions on upgrading to RN314/6

First the 8 TiB (note 1024 units, not 1000) is a growth limit, so it is x+8TiB, where x is the volume size after your initial install (or last factory reset). It is quite hard to hit this expansion limit on a 4-port unit unless you are expanding to 4 TB drives. 9 TB = 8.2 TiB, so your starting point would have to be ~200GB or less. The 16 TiB ceiling also cannot be hit in a 4 port unit unless you use 6 TB drives.

The comparison chart is on page 3 here: http://www.netgear.com/images/ReadyNAS_ ... -73098.pdf The extra drive bays are the main difference. The RN316 has a significantly beefier [internal] power supply, the RN314 uses a brick. Both approaches have their plusses/minuses.
