RAID 10 Expansion

I have a RAID 10 using (4) 4TB drives.  I was running out of space, so I added two more drive into the empty bay 5 and bay 6.  I went into the volume, choose the two new drives and clicked "Expand".  I think what I have done is increase the redundancy and not the available space.  The sync is in process now.  The disk free space has not changed which is why I think that is happening.

Unit 626X

Firmware 6.10.1

When it's done syncing, it's probably going to be still at the original 830GB free instead of the 4TB+ free that I had expected.

What can I do to remove bay5 and bay6 from the RAID 10 volume?  Is it as simple as removing them?  If I am successful, is there a way to expand the existing RAID 10 for more free storage?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think gjohnson71 is trying to change RAID levels, he is sticking with RAID-10.  But he does want to expand to 6 disks instead of 4.

I am thinking (like you) that the expansion will show up when the resync is complete.  But mdstat.log will show the details of how the RAID array is set up, and will also show us the sync status.

  • Can you download the log zip file and copy/paste mdstat.log here?

expanded available space will not change until the 2 extra disks have finished syncing (going form 4 disk to 6 disk) it shouldnt take that long in raid 10 (as the mdadm has to add the 2 extra disks then the BTRFS filesystem expands to fill that new space, you cant have more space until sync/expand proccess has finished)

you cant change raid levels via the GUI unless that as changed (apart from raid5 to raid 6 but that is called add Party disk, x-raid must be turned off before inserting the new disk or it will auto expand with raid5 if its currant set to raid5 unless its the 7th disk then it auto converts to raid6 on the 7th disk plugged in)

That's exactly what happened.  Once the sync was complete the extra space showed up.  I guess I was thinking that it would show up right away.  Thanks for all of your input.  Now I know for next time.
