ReadyNAS Duo has stopped working
Hi, I have a ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 v2 with 2 1TB drives, I tried to access it today and its not on my network map anymore. It was silent with network activity lights flashing and no lights on the front...

Hi, what is the default username and password to get in? Do I ned to reset the firmware to reset a possibly forgotten password?
I can browse all files properly off my wiges computer but I cant on mine though I can play videos via media player, so there is a seperate issue at work here with my pc.
It actually has 2TB drives in it, if I install another 2TB drive it should rebuild the array right?

Hello OZrevhead,
If you can browse files using one of the computers on the network then that means the files, disk and NAS are fine. It is a different problem on the computer that cannot browse. Maybe the way you access it, permission settings or SMB protocol of the computer.
How do you try to access the files on the computer that cannot browse the files? What file protocol do you use? What IP address do you use to browse the files?

I can only browse the files with disk 1 out, with disk 1 in it wont boot, hence my questions:
What are the username and password defaults?
If I install another 2TB drive in disk 1 will the NAS repair itself?
Thanks

Thanks, and if it doesnt log in (password changed years ago) then I have to do a first level reset?
- OZrevheadNov 06, 2015Aspirant
I reset the password and can log in, what do you want me to check?
Do I chuck a second 2TB in and let it repair? Or upgrade?
What would you suggest is a nice upgrade from this NAS? Something faster, quiet and simple to use.
:)

Hello OZrevhead,
If you are able to browse without the disk 1 inserted and just have disk 2, this means disk 1 is too faulty that it also affects the OS of the NAS.
Please check the disk 1 with diagnostic tools. Inserting a replacement disk to bay 1 where you removed disk 1 is needed if you want to be protected. I believe your NAS is currently using XRAID, this RAID level allows you to have 1 fault disk and still keep the data instace since disk 2 mirrored disk 1. Please make sure to never change disk order, disk 2 should always be in its respective bay.

If you are looking for a new ReadyNAS we have a range of devices available. It depends on how much data you want to use the NAS for as to what would be a good way to go.

I fitted a brand new 2TB drive to disk 1 and let is rebuild, next day I checked the status and it says the new drive is "dead", this sounds more like the NAS is faulty right?
I can still access disk 2 and read my saved files.

Hello OZrevhead,
Please make sure the new disk is listed at the HCL.
You may also try to test the disk with diagnostic tools to make sure.
If the disk passed the test then it may be time for you to get a newer version of ReadyNAS chassis. While you can still access files, I strongly suggest to back up the data.

Hi, my new Seagate drives are on the HCL, I fitted another new one to disk 2 and the NAS has again reported it as "dead". I fitted the original 2TB WD drive into my pc and am testing it now with the diagnostic tool but SMART status says its OK.
I have copied everything back off the NAS so no risk now.
Report back soon

OK the original 2TB WD drive that stopped the NAS from booting has passed the WD test tool quick test and extended test. Testing the first "dead" seagate now, it has passed the quick test and SMART status is PASS.

What model seagate drive?
- OZrevheadNov 15, 2015Aspirant
ST2000DM001
The NAS detects it fine but says its dead.

A lot of folks have had trouble with DM drives in a NAS (not just ReadyNAS either). I suggest WDC Red or Seagate VN drives, which have a lot less problem posts.
You can try powering down the NAS (then remove drive and the power cord for a bit). Then power back up, and try reinserting the drive.
