I think the bigger question is whether a 3.5" drive is safely mounted if you don't use the guide. I'm thinking it's provided for a reason.

I had already removed the middle "nub" from the guide for a prior drive model.
With that minor modification these drives fit using the guide.
Next time I power down I'll look a little closer.

I had trimmed the middle post out of the guide because the Seagate Drives I had been using did not have a screw hole for that "nub".
Having looked a little closer, the HUH728080ALE600 will fit into the tray with no modification to the guide.
