Ready NAS 204 - only shuts down every second time
Hello, The following processes ran optimally up to Release 6.10.5: - Detection of a USB-HD with always the same name 'USB_HDD_1' - The system switched off completely when shutting down Bo...

Thanks for your help post.
I'm a layman. But the system had been running without problems for more than 4 years up to Release 6.10.5. They only appeared exactly after the change to 6.10.6 and also a few months later with 6.10.7.
Nothing has changed in the hardware or infrastructure of the system.
Therefore I suspect a strong causal connection in the two releases.

I believe Sandshark is suggesting that you revert to the older firmware, and see if the problems disappear.
You'd do this by downloading the arm binary for 6.10.5 from https://kb.netgear.com/000063642/ReadyNAS-OS-6-Software-Version-6-10-5 Extract the binary from the zip file, and then manually install it from the system->settings page in the web ui.

Yes, reverting back would be the way to confirm the cause and effect you are assuming. While you say the change happened "exactly" at the change to 6.10.6, can you be sure? While it seems you power your NAS on and off a lot, many only re-boot for updates and other occasional needs, so a reboot for an update may show a latent problem that's simply not been triggered until that reboot.
The main reasons I suspect there is something else involved is that nobody else has reported similar behavior with that update and others have reported similar behavior (though not usually exactly every other power cycle) due to a standby voltage issue. I have a 214 I bought for parts that has that problem.

Too bad.
Going back to a pre-release is usually out of the question for me because:
- Effort despite uncertain outcome
- Safety step backwards
- Workaround is possible (pull the plug), but annoying
I can't find the post anymore, but I've read a similar post before. However, somewhere outside of this community (but also affected NetGearNAS).
Topic "Power off": Since I usually don't need the NAS during the week, it makes no sense to let it run and waste energy unnecessarily. Therefore "power off".

Nobody is suggesting you go back to a pre-release, but a previous full release version from before you noticed the error. It doesn't even need to be permanent, just long enough to see if that really is the issue.

FWIW, my RN202 is on a power schedule, and is working fine with 6.10.7 - no issues with the power-off failing to complete.
I think it's unlikely that the power issue is related directly to 6.10.7. Do you have any apps installed?
The USB drive recognition issue might well be a firmware issue. I don't use USB drives for backup myself (my RN202 is one of my backup NAS). So that is not something I can test.
