ReadyNAS 100 series spin down
I have been using a Duo V1 for several years and am very happy (once the PSU problem was sorted out). Unfortunately I have now run out of capacity because of the 2TB limit on this device. I think the ReadyNAS 104 is best for my needs. I use the device for backing up all my files and disk images from several computers but it is not used every day. If I am away from the office for more than 24 hours I tend to turn the device off completely but this is a nuisance. I am interested to know if the 104 puts the hard drives to sleep after periods of inactivity which would be sensible in my case. I can cope with a slight delay in accessing the device to achieve this and it would save keeping the drives running 24 hours a day. If they do shut down can I still access the device remotely when I am travelling? I would appreciate any advice you can give on this.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDisk spin down is not available yet.
- Arpeggio1AspirantThanks for the response. I see in the user guide that there is a wake on LAN function. I presume that this doesn't do anything yet?
- Wake on LAN works on the 104
- Arpeggio1AspirantNow I am confused! If the disks keep spinning what is it that goes to sleep?
Thanks for your help. - Wake-on-Lan support means that when a Wake-on-Lan "magic packet" is sent to the RN104, it will power itself on and boot up. (Also if the NAS were not powered down, but instead had the CPU were in a sleep state, the CPU would resume operating normally with no reboot).
- Arpeggio1AspirantMany thanks for the education. I have ordered the 104 with 3 Western Digital 3TB red drives. I will see how I get on!
