ReadyNas 102 - dead following firmware upgrade + factory reset doesnt work

Any help really appreciated !

It would appear that my ReadyNas102 recently performed an automatic firmware upgrade - I got the usual emails saying :

- Firmware upgrade is scheduled to update firmware at <04/02/2022 01:00:00>.#

then

- Downloading firmware version (6.10.7) and will update firmware shortly.

then

- The system is rebooting.

after which my ReadyNAS is completely inaccessible - both from windows and using Raidar software.  The usual  device lights are on.

I have tried to reset the OS and even factory reset i.e. power off, pin in the reset hole at the back, power on while holding the reset, cycle through the boot menu until power and disk 1 or 2* lights are on, press reset - but this doesn't seem to do anything.  (*depending on OS or factory reset)

Is there anything I can do to a) recover the ReadyNAS or b) recover the data on the disks ?

The two installed disks were configured as Raid 0 (unsure of details). I can connect a disk to a windows PC and see the file structure using the free version of Reclaime recovery software- apparently a BTRFS partition - but cannot access the files unless I buy the software.  Is there a free solution ?

Ive tried booting using a Linux (ubuntu) USB but that was unable to read the disk

Again, any help really appreciated !

Richard

PS I do have a backup on a cloud backup service but that is a few months old so I would lose some recent files ... and  of course wouldn't get my ReadyNAs working again

Yes.  There is beta-level software for windows (mdadm and btrfs) that you can install

That should let you copy off the data with only one disk.

I haven't used this myself, but there are some others who have tried it, and found it worked ok.

Are the disks installed?  The factory default option will format them, and lose all the data.  If the disks are not installed, then OS reinstall and factory default are not possible.  The OS is on the disks.

The OS reinstall might not solve this - however it will reset the admin password back to password if it success, and make some other configuration changes (all of which can be done).

You might want to install RAIDar on a PC, and see what status you are getting from the NAS (if any).  https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads#raidar

      Thank you Stephen

I have tried these on Windows 11 however they appear incompatible (cant install the driver). I will get access to a windows 10 PC at the weekend and try again.

I will post back on how I get on

      Kind Regards

        Hi

Ive now tried this on Windows 10 without success.

Installed btrfs version 1.8 and rebooted as requested

Installed WINMD and rebooted as requested

3x Disks now show up in the file manager - all called "Local Disk" however selecting any of them gives a pop-up error saying "<DISK Letter> is not accessible.  The device is not ready"

If i go to Windows Disk Management I can see the 3x new volumes - (Disc 2 partition 1), (Disk 2 partition 2) and (Disk 2 partition 3).  Sizes 4.00 GB, 512 MB and 927.01 GB.  Layout = Simple, Type = Basic, File System = Blank

        Any suggestions ?

        Much appreciated

        Richard
