Here are the answers to your questions.
- Is firmware 6.5.1 appropriate for a low end unit like the 102? Yes, there shouldn't be any problem with 100 series running the latest 6.5.1 firmware.
- Should I be concerned about the error? I'm not quite certain about this error message but I could pass this along to my colleagues.
- Shouldn't the eSATA drive be recognised automatically? What was the file format of the hard drive?

It would be useful to know what the error is, and how it could be fixed thanks.
The eSATA drives have all been NTFS 2.5inch drives. The lack of any "whirring" makes me think the drives aren't spinning up so I am thinking it may be a power issue. Does the ReadyNAS provide power through the eSATA PORT?

No. There is a variant of eSATA called eSATAp that includes power. But normal eSATA doesn't provide power, and that is what the NAS uses.

Ok, thanks StephenB.
Any further thoughts on the error message?
As backups seem to be robust again, I am thinking of resetting the drive and restoring from the backups. I am not sure I trust the ReadyNAS when it is showing an error, but based on the time it took to reinstate the backups, a restore will take ages.
