ReadyNAS 102 performance with bit rot protection
What is the expected performance hit for bit rot protection? I want to werify my numbers. I have tested it with a 53.7 GB set of large (700 MB CD images) and these are my results:
PC->NAS 995 s 55,26 MB/s
NAS->PC 900 s 61,10 MB/s
PC->NAS (protection enabled) 1430 s 38,45 MB/s (44% penalty)
NAS (protection enabled)->PC 1762 s 31,20 MB/s (96% penalty)
Are these OK? Any hints why read performance is slower the write?
And a question: Is bit-rot protection enabled per share? If I enable Checksums for the volume without enabling protection for any share will it do anything?
The 102 is a cost effective storage solution so the performance hit is likely to be more noticeable than with other models.
Particularly if you have made in place modifications to files read performance could be quite slow as the file becomes more and more fragmented over time.Bit-rot protection is enabled per share. With checksums enabled I believe you would be notified if a checksum doesn't match, but there would be no way to fix it unless bit-rot protection was already enabled.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm aware this is a budget NAS, that's why I've bought it. It's my first NAS and I'm happy with both the performance and feature set. Just wanted to check whether the numbers are what others are getting, to make sure I haven't misconfigured anything.

Well for optimal performance there are things you can do e.g. disable any services/apps you are not using.
Is your system newly setup or have you been using it for a while?
We do recommend scheduling volume maintenance (weekly defrag and balance). Best to schedule maintenance to run at times when you are using the NAS lightly.
