readynas 2100 4x8tb

Netgear just added > 4 TB drives to the HCL for the RN100 series (and you have a rack-mount variant of the RN100).
With current firmware, there is a 16 TiB max volume size (not the max disk size), so if you were to go with 4x6TB drives you'd need to use flexraid, and have multiple volumes.
As far as 8 TB goes, if you are thinking the Seagate Archival drive (ST8000AS0002) then in my opinion that is a poor choice. The purpose of that drive is "cold storage", and Seagate does not recommend it for RAID. Although it has high capacity (and quite reasonable read speeds), the write speeds are variable and very slow. That's inherent to the SMR recording technology that drive uses.
Also, it is not supported at all by Netgear.
If you do decide to use it anyway, set it up for jbod, and not RAID.
Actually your profile indicates you have a 2100 v1. Your ReadyNAS is shown under Legacy on the compatibility list.
The 2120 is a newer model.
The 2100 v1 does not support volumes larger than 16TB.
if you want to use disks larger than 4TB I would look at getting a new NAS.
