ReadyNAS 214 - Can I simply add a 4th drive, or is there something I have to do to prep?
I've been running 3 drives in my 4 bay RN214.
Drives are all WD RED 4TB internal hard drives. Old drives were 64MB cache, the new drives are 256MB cache.

The other day I had one of my old drives go bad. I purchased two identical new drives and swapped out the bad one for a new one. The system re-synced and everything looked good.
Today I deleted a bunch of movies off my NAS and oddly the system later emailed me and said I had less than 10% of my hard drive space left and should fix that. Not sure how after I deleted a bunch of movies I'd have less space...
I did purchase two identidal drives as I knew that I would have to eventually add more storage. So, I plugged the new drive in without any preparation. The hot swap feature worked so well when I pulled the bad drive and swapped in the new one, I assumed the system would handle it if I just plugged in a new, fourth drive, even though it's only been running off of three drives in the past.
The system froze. This error came up: page_address+4
I couldn't get to the Admin page. I couldn't get the system to respond at all, even to pushing the power button. So, I pulled the power in hopes it would reset on it's own.
- I pulled the 4th drive before turning the power on again. When I put it in the system didn't do anything. I couldn't hear it reading the drive or anything. The only thing that happened was an error that came up on the screen of the NAS.
The system is now re-syncing. It says it'll take 35 hours (about the same amount of time it took to rebuild the system when I hot swapped the new drive in for the bad one).
A minute or two after the power came back on, and it finished booting, an error message came up:
data DEGRADED
So, did I screw everything up by putting the 4th drive and then pulling it?

I think the 4th drive you have added have been in prep for a resync and froze before you unplugged the power. That is why it is being detected as part of the RAID now and you are getting a degraded status. The resync usually happens as well if a power outage or unexpected shutdown has been detected by the NAS.
I think the best thing to do is let the resync finish and then re-add the 4th drive, let it resync and run volume maintenance on your NAS. This way the space calculation would be corrected.

Was the warning about your data volume or the root (OS) partition? A too-full OS partition can cause that kind of issue. If it was about the OS partition, it would have been worded as "Volume: System volume root's usage is XX%. This condition should not occur under normal conditions. Contact technical support."
If it was the data partition, your "deleted" data is likely still in snapshots, still taking up space. And if you did a defrag afterward thinking that would help, it could do the opposite. because the newly moved data needs space other than the old snapshot versions of the same files. If this does not apply, try doing a scrub.
