ReadyNAS Ultra 2 unresponsive but doing something - syncing?

I have an Ultra 2 (RNDU2000) that has been working fine for years but stopped working over the night. There was no power failure or I would have noticed with some other devices. I tried pressing the power button twice to do a restart and here is what I'm seeing now:

1. Power LED and disk LEDs are blinking in unison at a rate of about 2-3 times/second. The disk activity light shows occasional activity. It's not constant but only takes seconds between indicating some activity.

2. I cannot access the web UI and RAIDar does not detect the NAS.

3. I cannot ping the IP address but it appears to be grabbing one from the router. If I unplug the ethernet cable and refresh, I see the NAS disappear. If I plug it back in, it eventually shows up again using the IP I have reserved for it.

At this point, I'm wondering if it is syncing and I should let it go or if I should I take additional steps to get things working again. I may be due for a new NAS but I'd like to get this working first if I can.

  • It sounds like it is trying, but failing, to stop all processes prior to shutting down.  Check the status with RAIDar.  If it doesn't say "syncing", and especially if it says "shutting down", then you are going to have to do a long press of the power button or pull the power to force a shut-down, then power back on.

Does the led pattern match one of these patterns?

LED blink behavior for 2 disk systems is three quick blinks of all disk LEDs and the backup LED, followed by an 1s delay,
followed by a number of slow blinks. The number of slow blinks will be the error code.

      Current error codes:
      1 - Vendor mismatch
      2 - No disks detected
3 - Bad contents on root partition of disks
      4 - Flash error
      5 - Unsupported RAID configuration

The power and disk LED lights were blinking steadily in unison which I couldn't really reconcile with the manual. The idea that it was failing to shut down rather than start up made sense, so I did a forced shutdown and restarted.

Everything appears to be fine now. I checked the health status and logs in RAIDiator and don't see anything unusual. I don't have an explanation for what happened but appreciate the suggestions. Thanks.
