When you put the NAS in tech support mode on 4.1.7 or later a secure connection is made to NetGear meaning that ports shouldn't need to be forwarded on your router (not having to port forward is much more secure as it virtually eliminates the possibility of someone trying to hack their way into your NAS when it's in tech support mode).
