ReadyNAS blown up - repair? Compatibility of disks?
Hi
Over the weekend my ReadyNAS NVX (4-bay unit) which I've had quite a number of years blew up. I pressed power, there was a loud bang and a strong burning smell and the circuit breaker on all power sockets in the house tripped. I suspect a short circuit of some kind.
Anyway, the unit is now dead, i.e. does not respond to pressing the power button.
I have a backup of everything but need to decide whether it is worth getting it repaired, or just buy a new unit. Has anyone had a unit repaired (I'm in the UK) and was it cost-effective?
If I replace it I am thinking I can just put the disks (if not damaged in the short circuit) into a new unit but don't know whether disks from an old unit will work in a new one?
Any thoughts on all of this would be welcome.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIs this a NVX (has 5 year warranty) or a NVX Pioneer (has 3 year warranty). Is the unit still under warranty?
- peter2011AspirantHi I think it is a Pioneer. It is a "Business Edition" and came without disks. I am not sure when I bought it (and the paperwork will be long gone), but I'm guessing 2007.
Peter - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe Business Edition has a 5 year warranty. Did you register it? The NVX was released in 2009 so it should still be under warranty. Contact support.

Thanks so very much for your last post. Of course! Registration! Brilliant! Thanks for that idea. It seems I had managed to register - there it was in black and white - conclusive proof of warranty cover! The bottom line is that a new unit is already on its way to me from ReadyNAS support - indeed it's an upgrade to a Pro4 as the NVX is either no longer available or too old to be let out on its own!
Excellent service from ReadyNAS also - really top-ranking I would say.
Peter - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes the NVX has been discontinued a long time now. Many user have got the nice upgrade you've got after their NVX units failed under warranty.
