You don't have to use the in-built cloud features to access it remotely. You could use OwnCloud (there is an add-on for this) to access some data remotely.
You can port forward to access https to access the web admin interface or connect via a VPN or even port forward SSH. For files you could port forward e.g. FTP or use OwnCloud or similar.
Only for the NetGear cloud features or doing remote updates (you can download a firmware image and install locally) or remote add-on installs (again you can download the add-on and install it locally) are dependent on NetGear servers. You don't need to use NetGear cloud features and can access the NAS remotely using methods that are not dependent on NetGear at all.
