Of course it also costs them money, since they don't add a new product to the list unless they have actually tested it. I imagine that for disk drives that is not a quick test.

It could easily be millions of dollars.
Though I have wondered if revising their support polices would make things easier for everyone. In particular, listing disks that are known not to work, and provide best effort support for disks that are not listed on the "known bad" list.
