ReadyNAS Duo - Bad SATA Channel/Port?

Hi,

I've owned a ReadyNAS Duo for about three years. I bought it mostly to have a live back-up of family photos. Over the years I've gone from a 2 500gb configuration to a 1 500gb + 1 1000gb to 1 1000gb + 1 2000gb and finally to 2 1000gb configuration. Some of the disk shuffling was driven by the 2000gb drive which seemed to be a dud.

Anyway, a month or so ago, the thing stopped booting up properly. The blue light on front would just pulse slowly. After some messing around, I pulled the 2tb harddrive (which had been reporting SMART errors) and the Duo fired up just fine. The 2tb drive was in Channel 1.

Just a few days ago, I got a second 1tb drive and put it in channel 1. Failed to boot up. Slow pulsing light. Since then, I've been trying various configurations of drives and it seems like whenever there is a drive of any sort in channel 1, the machine fails to boot up, even if it is a known good drive. The machine boots up properly only when there is a drive in channel 2 only.

Has anyone else had any experience with this sort of problem before?

  • What are the makes and models of the 1TB drives and the 2TB drive?

Are you getting any error messages in your logs?
