ReadyNAS Duo - Final Firmware update ? -> ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

Hey NetGear.

It's not cool you have end of life-ed these devices so they are no longer accessible. These are archive devices which we entrusted Netgear with large amounts of our data. They were brilliant in their day.

Thanks to those who suggested downloading an old version of Mozella Firefox v94.0.2 so we can access the admin page, at least after this point I know my NAS device is not dead.

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/94.0.2/win64/en-US/

I have read several threads where users have created their own Firmware v4.1.16 -> v4.1.17 so they can access their data but this is not an official Netgear patch and quite complex to apply.

What date will an official Netgear patch be released, so I can access my data once again, like I could 7 months ago ?

Thanks

Mark

First check that the SMB 1/CIFS client is enabled on the PC.  Do this by going into "turn windows features on or off".

If that's not enough, then try this test:

Open CMD from the Windows search bar, and then enter:

    net use * /delete /y
    net use t: \\NAS-IP-ADDRESS\SHARENAME /user:admin NAS-ADMIN-PASSWORD

substituting real values for the stuff in caps.  Be careful on the typing - particularly on spaces and the two different slashes used in these commands.

If this works, it will map the share to drive letter T.  Let us know what happens (and what error you get if it fails).

    Mark,

Its the other way round. All these RN were EoL long before some famous souls in the browser field decided you should no longer be allowed to access your archive data. These people seem to live in a perfect and up2date world with a lot of money, time, and resources and they have no reason to deal with legacy systems like ours.

A similarity from the automotive market for you? Older Tesla S were equipped with 2G/3G data radios only. Most mobile providers are dropping 3G support many markets, leaving (or having already left) these cars in the Internet-less times. Now, one could update modules - but this does not go on Tesla.

For Windows users, the Windows (Chromium) Edge IE Mode does come extremely handy. And it will remain supported until 2029. It does continue to allow access to your legacy ReadyNAS, or whatever other legacy embedded device not offering state of the art SSL.

In one point I can agree: My favorite NAS maker has released patches for all their legacy models. It can be done....

    Regards,

    -Kurt

AFAIK they have no plans to do that.  The final firmware for your Duo was released 5 years ago.

The other option you have is to disable the redirection to https.

The only thread I am seeing for that was aimed at solving a different problem (adding SMB 2), which would not solve the browser TLS/SSL problem.

I have now modified etc/frontview/apache/Virtual.conf to remove / hash out the offending lines which prevent modern browsers displaying the admin login page and this now works, so thanks to all for this.

Within ssh root@x.x.x.x I can login and see the contents of my NAS device including the shared folders. "ls" command

However Windows File Explorer still won't connect to my shares and therefore I can't easily access my files as I once could. What have I missed please ?

I still believe NetGear should offer a new firmware update. These are archive devices we entrusted Netgear to keep our data safe and ACCESSABLE.
