Readynas Duo V1 Disk Configuration

Hi, I've just bought a second hand Readynas Duo and will be using it to store my images. I had one drive installed ok but when I installed the second drive I did not gain any extra storage ( 2 x 2TB drives just gives 2TB storage?).

I am not familiar with RAID systems but I would just like to have the 4TB capacity in the unit.

Can anyone let me know how to achieve this? Schoolboy method only please!

Many thanks, Richard.

Correct.  The system is using RAID-1.  That mirrors the two disks (everything written to one is automatically written to the other).  That gives you some protection when a disk fails.

The best way to do what you want is to create two 2 TB volumes (one on each disk), and then put some shares on each.  One volume would be called C, the other would be called D.

To get there, you first need to install RAIDar 4.3.8 on a PC.  Get that from https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads Make sure that it finds your NAS.

Also, download the hardware and software manuals for your NAS.

    http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/RAIDiator4-1_SW_en_06Dec11.pdf

    http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/Duov1_NV+v1_HW_en_06Dec11.pdf?

Also, if your NAS isn't running 4.1.16 firmware, then you should upgrade it before you begin.

Once that is taken care of, you

    1. Remove the second disk from the NAS
    2. Follow the procedure to change to flexraid on page 19 of the software manual.  Note the factory reset is described on pages 15-16 of the hardware manual.
    3. Select RAID-0 as the RAID type.
    4. Go through the normal system setup.
    5. Hot-insert the second disk
    6. Follow the procedure to "create a volume" on page 20 of the software manual.

Now create some shares on each of the two volumes, and load your files into them.

      OK. sounds good to me.

Thanks very much for the info, I'll give it a try.

      Cheers,

      Richard.
