Readynas DUO V2
Hi there,
Just a newbie in Readynas devices, so already had huge problems:
- I had 2 HDD WD40 EFAX series (Not EFRX), and put them on the nas, as intended to, just out the hdd sleeve (0 km/miles hard disks)
- I make a factory reset and wait until something appear on Raidar (I use both 6.5 and 4.3.8), like setup, and then as to create a RAID0 4+4 TB device...
- Since it takes a long time to "cancel" the auto RAID1 creation and after 3 hours nothing happens i cut power and re-reset the device...
- since then, both disks were unusable, as they are locked in process and could not create or erase anything on both disks.
- Conect a WD40 Black series, all ok
- Add a 3rd WD 40 RED EFAX, added ok (4 + 4 TB) however could not create any Share on "/d" HDD.
- Connect WD40 Black (the OK disk) + 1 red NAS EFAX locked, test not ok, must change HDD
- Connect WD40 Black + 1 red nas EFAX locked, test ok, all green, could not access "/d"
- Connect both locked drives on pc, tried to unlock with WD master pass (WDC^10)+WD, comand refused
- Conect as IDE, tried ZU, MHDD 4.6, Victoria, etc, no success...
Coud any of you give some light about this?
There is no data on any of the disks, so, there is no need to conserve "data".
Will Appreciate any help abou this.

We'll see. The issue can show up whenever you do enough sustained writes to the volume.

Let's confirm the v2 model - labeling is very confusing on this. Is your NAS running 4.1.x firmware, or is it running 5.3.x firmware?
This is critical, as the 4.1.x systems are limited to 2 TB disks.

Exchange the EFAX drives for the EFRX. The WD40EFAX drives use SMR, which don't work well with RAID. Write speeds are highly variable (and can be glacially slow). WD has some advanced caching algorithms, but they don't appear to be enough to always overcome the inherent issues with SMR.
I haven't seen many posts here from folks trying to use them in legacy NAS like yours, but folks who have tried to use these drives in newer ReadyNAS have had a lot of trouble with them.
General advice is to not use any of the WD Red models (which are all SMR), but instead go with WD Red Plus or Seagate Ironwolf (which are all CMR).
It is a V2.
It had "Readynas duo V2" in the front, and it uses 5.3.13 Firmware.
Now I'm aware of the problems in using EFAX red nas series, however, this is not a big problem if I span data, since there is no SYNC between disks, as it is in RAID1. Like I did with WD Black + WD Red EFAX (Which had a /c and a /d device- each one with 3.6 Tb)
I came along someone refering that intend to ask near the engineering dep to include some kind of routine inside software to unlock hard disks locked by NETGEAR nas devices, however, in no other place looks to be implemented.
I see in several cases that the unlock could be made remotly, which of course is not in my knowledge to do it - Already tried in several forms and DIY on this forum.
So, what i want is to recover the access to HDD to use them even not in a NAS device.
Further assistance from netgear would be good, however it is a legacy device and even the problem could be replicated in any netgear device where user stops secure erasing in any form - or even a power loss, the solution should be given by NETGEAR.
Furthermore when I contacted WD about this issue they say that it is a NAS problem since it is the NAS who lock the disks - Which it is true.
So, the interest solely is to unlock the disks to use them on other system without raid.
