  • I think you must mean an RN104.  You can migrate the disks to another OS-6 ReadyNAS.

The simplest migration is to an RN214.  It also uses an ARM processor, so both apps and the NAS firmware will simply work post-migration.

You can also migrate to an x86 ReadyNAS (RN300 series and above).  The NAS will automatically reinstall the firmware to match the processor (preserving the settings).  It can't reinstall the apps, so you will need to take care of that manually.  If the RN104 is still working, it's best to simply uninstall the apps before you migrate the disks.  I also suggest installing a scratch (spare) disk on the new NAS first, and checking the firmware.  If it's older than what you are running on the RN104, you should update it before you migrate.

If the 104 still works, you may want to consider relegating it to being a backup to the new one.  If the copy of your photos on your NAS is the only copy, you are always at risk of losing them.

      Hi StephenB,

Thanks for your help through the years, since I bought the RN104 back in 2013.
I was going to buy a RN214 to stash away, just in case something happens to the RN104, which is still working flawlessly.
It appears RN214 is nowhere to be bought.  On Netgear's own website, when I click the "Find a Store" button, it points to a couple of retailers including Amazon and BestBuy.  Both said it was sold out.  One guy in Amazon Marketplace want to sell it for $900.
Anyway, what is the next best thing other than RN214, that allows a smooth migration from RN104.  I also see 4-Bay Rack Mount device.

NETGEAR ReadyNAS 2304 $379  Is that an alternative?

The only arm platforms are the RN100, RN200, RN210, and RN2120 (rackmount).

The 2304 is x86 - you can migrate to it, but most apps (for instance plex) would need to be reinstalled.  Other x86 systems (desktop or rack-mount) would also work.

One alternative is to deploy the second NAS on a power schedule, and back up to it daily (or maybe even weekly).  If it's another ReadyNAS OS-6 system you would still have the option of migrating disks if needed (though likely you wouldn't).
