ReadyNAS NV - New power supply Power LED 3 fast flash

LED guide says: "OS image on NAND is corrupted, please perform NAND recovery through TFTP or USB"

 

This is a 10 year old, very reliable, Infrant ReadyNas NV -- yes, that old.  (-:

 

It's hard to find specific details on which USB recovery utility is compatible with this ancient unit. Can anyone point me at the correct FAQ/documentation for this unit?

    Hello bmehling,

     

    Try performing USB boot, please. If it gets the same issue, checking RAM might help as it could also be the one causing the problem.

    Just to verify, the LED pattern is:

    Power LED: Pulsing (light intensity periodically changes. A few seconds before it enters into this state, it was blinking)

    Disk LEDs:

    Alternating between all four on, and only 3rd LED on.

     

    The USB recovery utility for Sparc platform should still be available somewhere, I am going to search around as well.

    Note: USB recovery needs 2nd stage boot loader working.

    The 1st stage boot loader can do TFTP boot(Never touched after release)

    The 2nd stage boot loader can do USB boot (May be updated after release) - Try to power on NV by pressing and hold power button for 15 seconds to see if LCD display different message at 5th, 10th, 15th second to verify if 2nd boot loader is good)

    If 2nd boot loader is good, USB recovery should be able to recover the corrupted NAND

      I apologize for the long delay between responses. Life/work had other priorities...

       

      Yesterday I fired up the NV to verify the LED sequence was in fact indicating a NAND recovery was required. Not sure if this is better or worse, but after a few boot attempts I was only able to see the blue light fast blink. According the the LED sequence/translation document this indicates normal boot UNLESS the blinking continues beyond 30 seonds. In my case it continues indefinitely (over 5 minutes). That document suggests:

       

      1) reseat memory (done)

      2) perform NAND recovery (attempted, see below)

      3) possible PSU problem (I do not think I've ever replaced the PSU so this seems a reasonable suggestion)

       

      re: Nand recovery take 1 (in case others get stuck here)

       

      - I grabbed the latest recovery image I could find (4.1.14), which appears to support Sparc-based systems. I see a relase note for 4.1.15, but can't find a recovery image.

      - I dd'd it to a USB thumbdrive (64gb, USB3)

      - Separate attempts using both the front and back USB ports

      - Same result: after releasing the power button at the 20 second mark, the 4th drive light comes on after a few seconds... but then nothing. Power light blinking, 4th drive light on. I left it for a while (10+ minutes), but none of the other drive lights ever light up.

       

      Nand recovery take 2

       

      - Same as above, however I used an old USB stick (same era as the ReadyNAS!)

      - This time the recovery performed as documented (drive lights did there thing, NAS finally shut itself down)

      - When I fired it back up the power light fast blinked for > 5min; then after a while sent solid (just on)

       

      However:

      - the drive/act lights have not lit up at all -- I am not sure if I'm hearing the drives at all at this point, but occasionally hear something like head movement... just not sure.

      - Not pinging on previous IP address

      - RAIDar does not detect it

      - Ethernet port does have a link (solid orange) and I see some intermittent activity (green blinking)

       

      Any suggestions on next steps?  Is there a way to verify the PSU?  Is there a way to to get a terminal via USB or something (since network appears dead)?

        Hello bmehling,

         

        Please connect the NAS straight to the computer and ensure you are using a good known working LAN cable between them and that its both ends are securely plugged in.

         

        RAIDar should still see the NAS with its default IP address if it does not have a manual configured IP address, even without any disks, RAIDar should still see it. Once it sees the NAS, put a static IP address to the computer's network settings. It should be with the same subnet of the NAS IP.
