ReadyNAS NV+ Cannot access Files

I setup a ReadyNAS NV+ back in 2010 with a single 2 TB drive.

I haven't touched it or the drive in many many years, but I need access to some files on the drive.

Plugging the NAS in and firing it up seems to go well, it gets an IP etc.

Accessing the /shares location of the IP says no shares available.

Accessing /admin fails due to security issues, stating a mismatch or security versions below the browser minimum.

Is there any way to get access to either the admin console to create a share again?

When I pulled the drive out and put it in an external hard drive enclosure, windows could see the partition but seemed unable to mount the partition where the files are.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Try explore2fs for Windows, with the drive in the external enclosure. Let me know if it works please!

I have used it for other purposes but never with a drive from my NV+ that I recall.

      Thanks for the fast reply!

Explore2FS, both the newest beta and newest didn't work, however, Virtual Volumes (which appears to be a replacement) does seem to read the drive.

Do you happen to know where within the filesystem the NV+ typically stored user files?

        Ah ha!

I found it, it had mounted 3 partitions, and I had missed one.
        Thank you!

That's because the browsers recently dropped support for TLS 1.0/TLS 1.1.  Unfortunately, the NV+ doesn't support TLS 1.2.

However, there are two ways you can still access /admin.  One is to use internet explorer on a Windows PC.  The other is to download an older version of firefox (94.0.2 will work).  https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-firefox  After you install firefox, immediately change the settings to disable automatic updates.

Either way, you will still see a warning due to the self-signed certificate used in the NAS.  But you will be able to connect anyway (select "advanced" if you don't see that option).

There is a workaround for the NV+ browser issue here:  https://community.netgear.com/t5/New-ReadyNAS-Users-General/Workaround-for-ERR-SSL-VERSION-OR-CIPHER-MISMATCH-problem-for/m-p/2198243 Note it requires ssh access to the NAS.

If you are using your browser:  This only will work if you enabled http as a file sharing protocol for the shares.  This is not enabled by default.

If you are using (or want to use) Windows File Explorer:  First go into "turn windows features on or off" and then enable the SMB 1 client.  Ignore the security warning.  Then open File Explorer, and enter \\nas-ip-address in the address bar (using the real IP address of course).  Be careful to use the correct slash - // will open your browser, which you don't want.

I found that by using the IE-Based-Tab Chrome extension
I was finally able to get back into my NV+1 via Radiator configuration
