The feature set will increase.
Like NetGear began small with IPv6 (not available on the Sparc-based NV+ v1 or yet on the new ARM-based NV+ v2) on x86 units supporting core services, NetGear has begun small with the new UI supporting core NAS features in 5.3.1. 5.3.2 was mainly a bug fix release. There are plans to increase the feature set in future firmware. I believe the iTunes Streaming Server feature is one that has been mentioned elsewhere.
Now with NetGear including proftpd in the GPL (http://www.readynas.com/gpl) that appears to indicate that they are at least considering adding it as a feature. Whether they will or not we'll have to wait and see.
