There are some advantages to parallel rebuild, but there are even easier improvements that can be made. Has netgear investigated using bitmaps, adjusting the the stripe_cache_size based on available memory, or disabling NCQ? I believe all of these would help and they are relatively simple tweaks. Bitmaps especially mean that only the used parts of the disks will get rebuilt and can be a huge win.
