ReadyNas 516 and My Future
ReadyNas 516 Latest Firmware, 5- 12TB drives (with the #2 Drive Removed, for Command Timeout Issues-
I have recently spent a lot of time, working with my old ReadyNas 516. First it had a disk failure, followed by a problem that turned out to be a bus issue, that created Command timeouts, which turned out to be a bad drive bay. I started out with all disks being 6TB,
and then upgraded to all new disks at 12TB each. After all this I was plagued with error messages- at this point after many disscussions online I decided to do a Factory Reset, hoping to end all these problems. However a NEW error has persisted no matter,
what I do. The Latest error is: Logs
2021-04-21 10:26:33: Assertion 'f->data_hash_table' failed at ../src/journal/journal-file.c:1047, function journal_file_link_data(). Aborting. The good thing is all Command Timeout Issues, are in the past. At one point Sandshark metioned that there may be a new NAS in my future. I am not sure if the error, could be corrected, however, the unit is NOT working like it used to, and I feel the time is now to fix it, as I have completely quit storing data on this device, and am waiting for it to resysnc, errors and all.
My Fix will be the purchase of a Netgear ReadyNas 626X 6 Bay Diskless, this seems available for about $1200, which is less than I have already spent in drives. All other fixes are over my head pricewise.
The bigest question I have is can I use my current NAS the 516, with this error message, as I do not know if it is a critical error, which might cause data loss. Also any feedback on my choice, as a replacement for my current ReadyNas 516. The Nas I would be buying would be New.
Thanks for All the help and opinions in advance
Jeff
The price is a sale price, preorder (I paid $700 for my 516 used about 7 years ago)
I'm glad you got through it.

In both cases it was a full root volume. Is the web ui giving you any indication of that? Did you install any apps after the reset?
If it is a full root, then it should be fixable without more expense. One option (painful) is to do yet another reset.

A few months back they were available for $900-$1000, but they were $1200 or more back early 2019. Supply has been limited (and there has been some speculation that Netgear is exiting the NAS business). FWIW, I have no information on that.
Anyway, the price is a somewhat high, but not crazy. Not sure where you are located, but there is one I see at the $1000 price point here: https://bluesquarepower.com/netgear-readynas-626x-6-bay-rn626x00-100nes.html
There are a couple of RN42x systems out there that are around $600 (they are gigabit only).

Stephen- Thanks for the quick reply, I did see the one for $1050, (Blue Square Power) but tried to look them up, on the netgear authorized resellers list, but could not find them. (they claim they are, but I have found people lie) I feel the 5 year warranty is important, and want to make sure they are legit. The CDW, was the $1200.00 price, they say,it should be in stock by the 9th, I am sure they are authorized Netgear Dealers.
As far as the 516 goes, I have no problem, doing another factory reset, as there is no data in it, or expectations- I think I might have done it twice, but will try again, the resysc is so slow- I couldn't care less. I figure with the Factory reset it blanks all drives, and starts as new, maybe there is an issue, with the bad bus, causing this errror. (but I will give it another shot)
Has anyone bought anything such as a ready NAS from Blue Square Power listed in the earlier link?
Lastly, I feel that I would rather goto the 626, than the RN4 series, as most all of that is EOL, and if Netgear quits making the NAS,I would rather have a Later Netgear than one of these non Netgear out there.
I spent about a week looking, and the (Blue Square Power/CDW were the only sellers out there, I could find.($1200 or less for a new Netgear NAS)
Thanks again-
Jeff

Just to clarify this: The RN520 and RN620 series were launched in 2016; the RN420 series were launched in 2017. So the RN420 series is a year newer than the RN620.
The RN626 does have some advantages - it supports 10 gigabit ethernet, and has server-grade (error correcting) RAM.

JohnCM_S , Marc_V : is something you can check? They aren't on this list: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/NETGEAR_Authorized_Resellers.pdf But I don't know if it is up do date.
