I just want to start out by saying hi to everyone and would appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

Welcom to the forum
Normally Netgear support discourages routine use of USB recovery on OS 4.2.x ReadyNAS. So maybe see if the Netgear mods have some other suggestions.
I have a couple of questions -
(a) if you install RAIDar on an PC, does it give you any more status information on the NAS? RAIDar is available here: http://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads#raidar
(b) Do you have disks installed in the ReadyNAS? If so, what models?
(c) have the disks been tested recently with vendor tools (seatools for seagate, lifeguard for western digital). These tools (unfortunately) are windows-only.

Thanks for your quick responce,
I do have Raidar on the pc and what is shows on start is the raidar help menu with the blue light blinking and stating that Background Taks active - a lengthy background task such as a system update in progress, also the red life support mode is blinking.
I do have disks installed - 5 WD 3.0TB - Model WD30EFRX - 68AX9Z0
I have not tested the disks at all.
I do have a windows 10 computer, but how would I go about testing the drives is they are in the Nas unit. Can I connect them directly to the computer?

You'd need to remove them, and put them into the PC. You can use a USB->SATA adapter or USB enclosure for this.
Do you care about the data on the drives, or is this the initial setup? If you don't care, you can aslo use the quick zeros function in Lifeguard to unformat the drives. Then reinsert them and power-up - the NAS will do a factory install.
Also, if RAIDar is giving you the firmware on the NAS, please let us know that it is. It could be either 4.2.x or 6.x.x

Raidar is showing 4.3.8
I do want to try to save the data on the drives if at all possible. I will check the drives on my computer and then let you know the outcome.

Did you have any luck with this one? I am having the same issue when trying to create the USB recovery tool.
