ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition replacement disk compatability

I have a six bay system using:

Name: RAIDiator-x86
Version: 4.2.28

WDC WD20EADS hard drives

It's hard to find the same drives anymore. Which drives can I mix with my system without issues? How easy is it to udgrade my system to use higher capacity drives such as 3TB?

Will these work?

WDC WD20EARS

WDC WD20EARX

WDC WD30EZRX

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • None of the "green" drives are recommended for use in a NAS.  You are much better off with the "red" ones.  The price diffferential is small.  There is no issue mixing drives so long as the new ones are as large or larger than the ones they are replacing.

Your system needs no upgrading to handle larger drives.  RAIDiator 4.2.28 handles them just fine.  But, you must install at least two before you will see any benefit (assuming single redundancy).  There are limits on how far you can expand the volume beyond where you started, though, and you cannot expand beyone 16TiB without a factory default with the larger drives in place.

If you are going to be doing a factory default, anyway, you may want to consider moving up to OS 6.  That will eliminate any future expansion issues.  But beware of 6.4.0, as many people are having troubles with it.  I recommend reading some of the threads about upgrading before you take the plunge.

I agree.  I just wanted to add that the 3 TB "Red" is the WD30EFRX.

At this point I'd wait for 6.4.1 to be released.
