Readynas Rn214 Disk Failure

Hi There.

Just had a 10TB Seagate Ironwolf drive crash after only a year which is not great at all. I have a RN214 4 bay NAS which had 4 x 10TB drives before crash. I have 12.24 TB free of the remaining 27.27 TB on the 3 drives left over and one of my questions is can I replace the 10TB crashed drive with a 1TB drive for instance. Would this reolve the data degraded warning I am currently getting on the NAS? My next question is do I have to replace the crashed drive to maintain x-raid "Raid 5" as there is ample space on the 3 drives. Any input or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks

  • Actually, you should have just as much space now as you had before you lost the drive.  You just have no redundancy, so loss of a second drive loses all data.

No, you cannot replace the drive with anything smaller than the others.  To reduce the size, you'd have to destroy the volume (and all data on it) and re-create it with the new drive set.  With 3x10TB and 1x1TB, you'd be approaching the 90% full level which it is recommended you not exceed.

Assuming that's not an OEM drive, so is covered by a Seagate warranty, you can get a replcement faster by using the Advanced Replacement  optionn where they send you one before you send yours back.  You have to give them a payment method in case your return is rejected (for handling damage, or other non-covered loss).

If you can still send it back to thte place of purchase, you should get a new drive from them where you will liklely get a refurbished one directly from Seagate.
