ReadyNAS Ultra 2 can see shares but can't access them
I have a readynas ultra 2 that I can see the shares on, but I can't access them. I can see the device on all the computers in my network, and I can see all the shares. When I try to access a share I...

No I did not try changing permissions. Everything is set to read/write default. I'll do it if you think it's worth a shot- should I just change it to read only or disabled and change it back?
I do get 2 error messages when I go to the admin page
the 1st says 'volume scan found errors that it could not easily correct. ensure you have current back ups and run a full volume scan through frontview'
the 2nd says 'the paths for the shares could not be found. typically, this occurs when the readynas is unable to access the data volume'
I tried to 'perform volume scan on reboot' but it didn't seem to work. On the reboot I got only solid power led and full fan speed. Perhaps I didn't let it run long enough? Does anyone know the expected behaviour of the device during the volume scan?

So this is not about permissions, something is wrong with the data volume.
Download the log zip file, and see if there is enough information there to figure out what happened. Look for smart info and also disk errors.
You likely need data recovery to get the data back. Do you have a backup?

I know one day someone is going to say "yes, of course" but that's not me today. I have the critical stuff backed up securely but there is a bunch of stuff that isn't that I would like to preserve...but if it's gone, it's gone
I pulled the disks and checked them using WDs data lifeguard tool- both passed the quicktest, so I didn't get into the extended test.
Logs only show the same 2 error messages i quoted before. I got another power supply so the low voltage messages are gone.
I feel like the problem is in the fact that it thinks my volume is 100% full. I know that not to be the case.

The quick test is just a confidence test. If it fails, then the disk is bad. But if it passes, you do need to run the full test.

Are you looking in the log zip file? Or just the summary in the web ui?
Also, the NAS has an OS partition on the drive (4 GB). Bad things can happen when that gets full.

You could try R-linux for Windows (free) and see if that can access your files. https://www.r-studio.com/free-linux-recovery/
