ReadyNAS Ultra 4

Question

I scored a ReadyNAS ultra 4 RNDU4000 earlier through work.
I have been given permission to take it home now I just need to get some drives for it.

It will be replacing my Ready NAS duo which has a single 2TB drive in it at the moment (A Seagate drive running 7200 rpm)

What drives shall I stick inside the Ultra.

is there really any difference in using 5400PRM drives? I do have a Gigabit network.
I will be using the Ultra as a media server as well as backing up my home computers.

once I install 2 drives I and copy the content down from the DUO I will move the Duo drive over to the Ultra will mixed 5400/7200 cause issues?

I have a mix of 2x3TB 5400 RPM and 2x1TB 7200 RPM drives in my NVX which is a little slower than the Ultra 4. I have not noticed a significant slowdown in file transfer rates. They have gotten along well now fro almost 3 months.

Using slower drives there is a slowdown but it's not that bad. I think it's a 10% performance hit using 5900RPM drives, so maybe a little more for 5400RPM ones.

Here's what I'd recommend:

1. Put a single disk in the NAS.
2. Update to latest RAIDiator (currently 4.2.19: http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_19_Notes)
3. Power down, put all disks in NAS
4. Do a factory default via the boot menu (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu

This will give you a clean setup on the latest firmware.
