Readynas upgrade Drive compatability

Hi,

I have just upgraded my Readynas Duo V2 to a 2nd hand Readynas 312

I was hoping to reuse my old hard drives from my duo in the 312 (with the drives formatted and installed) but they don't seem to show up on the compatability list for the 312.

I know this probably means they are not compatible with the newer NAS but what problems is this going to cause in reality?

I know Netgear won't give support on them but the 312 is also an older model so I imagine I won't get support anyway.

I'd really rather not spend more money on new drives when the older 2 are currently still working

Any input would be greately appreciated

Thanks

  • They likely are compatible.

What drives are you using (manufacturer and model)?

Whatever drives you use don't store the only copy of important data on the NAS.

That way if you have problems you can do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) if you need to either with the disks you already have or with new disks.

      Hi,

      Thanks for your help

The hard drives are 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green Drives WD20EARX

Its mostly used for backing up other computers and archive storage, everything that is on the NAS is also stored somewhere else

      Thanks

I don't know why they aren't on the list.  But they should work ok, though WD20EFRX would be a better option.  Personally, I'd try reusing them, but be prepared to replace them if they misbehave.

Generally I recommend NAS-purposed drives (WD Red Plus, Seagate Ironwolf), or of course enterprise-class.  I don't recommend WD Reds, as they are SMR (along with some desktop drives from both WD and Seagate).
