Yes.  And using ReadyCloud doesn't require registration.

I don't recall any case where Netgear allowed re-registration of used equipment, and I've read all the posts in the ReadyNAS forum for some years now.

There are cases where the NAS is owned by a business, and either the IT guy who purchased it leaves, or the company is acquired and the email addresses change.  And often a home user will switch email addresses, and not be able to access their profile due to a forgotten password.   In those cases Netgear will update the registration info in their back end.  But those NAS were never sold as used equipment.

So let's move on to what you can do.

Your best options are

• Deploy a VPN.  Many routers have openvpn built in.  This is good for secure remote access, it isn't a great option if you want to allow friends, etc to access the NAS.
• Purchase the OwnCloud add-on from rnextras.com and use the OwnCloud service.  This has similar features to ReadyCloud.  The add-on is inexpensive (~3 Euros).
• Enable FTP in the NAS and forward the needed ports in your router.   You'll need to pay attention to access permission (particularly write/delete permissions).  Your NAS will accept FTPS connections (which are secure), and you should set up FTP clients on your devices that use FTPS.  Unfortunately you can't set up the NAS to deny unencrypted FTP.

With FTP or openVPN, you'll also need DDNS - noip.com still has a free service option.

You should also start planning on upgrading your NAS to a current model.  Your end-of-life NAS is at least 5 years old (and likely older).  It is limited to SMB/CIFS 1.0, and that is being being deprecated by Microsoft due to security issues.  New NAS support SMB 3.0, have other new features and are a lot faster than your NV+.  My own NV+ is still in service as a backup NAS, but my main NAS is an RN526X (which runs OS 6).
