Replace 2 failed hard drives
Model: ReadyNas 104, Firmware 6.2.5
I must be one of the lucky 2% that had 2 hard disks fail in a 4 disk RAID configuration. In fairness disk 4 failed on Thanksgiving and disk 2 failed the day after but we were out of town so I came home to a 2 disk failure. I have a backup but its about 3 months old so I would like to replace the bad disks and hopefully restore the server. My ReadyNas 104 server is running firmware version 6.2.5 with 4 drives (500GB, 1 TB, 1.5 TB, 1.5 TB). Disk 4 and Disk 2 failed. I have 2 new replacement 2 TB drives (never been used or formatted) available to swap these out. I know to do this one at a time.
I thought if I removed disk 4 and put in the replacement disk the resync process would run but it hasn't. The server recoginzes there is now a new 2 TB drive in the 4th slot but it doesn't resync. Yesterday I put the failed disk 4 back in and the sync process ran. Then I swapped the bad disk out for the good disk and was hoping it would run again. What am I missing? Do I need to format the new drive first?
Here's the logs from when the drives failed:

If you've lost 2 disks, you might as well start over on the data volume - all the data is lost anyway.
So one thing you can do is insert both of the new drives (unformatted) and do a factory default. You'll need to build everything from scratch (configure the nas, install apps, reconfigure users and shares, restore data. You can save the configuration if you like (and restore it after you reinstall the apps).
Alternatively, insert both drives, switch to flexraid, and delete the data volume. Then create a new one with the same name, and switch back to xraid. You'll still need to reinstall apps (as their data area is also on the data volume). So this doesn't really save much work over the factory default.
