Well, the spin-down possibility was worth pursuing. If the removed drive still appears in the GUI, it's safe to DESTROY it once you are sure you never intend to put the drive back in. If the drive were in better shape, I'd suggest returning it to the NAS and EXPORTing it. But given its condition and that an EXPORT does write to it, that probably a bad idea here.
