Since you are on RAID5 your data should be protected by one drive failure just like what happened to your RN104 right now. It is best to make sure you have a backup of your data.
We really can't tell when a drive will fail or when it's life will end the same with any electronic devices. It might be possible that your drives are a old that mechanical failures occurred during any activity, it may be possible that a corrupt file did something. It is also best to check the logs (disk_info and smart_history) to check what errors the drive got.
Regarding removing the failed drive, it is best to have a replacement as well since getting another drive to fail will render your data offline and worst unrecoverable. Adding a lower cap drive is not advised/possible it should be the same cap or higher as well

Many thanks for the reply. Yes I accept that we can never tell but it seems strange that out of the blue it happens when removing loads of data but there you go.... coincidence I am sure. Anyway, how do I get the smart logs you were saying ?
Do I download them etc from somehwere?

You can download the full log zip file. Disk_info.log, smart_history.log, and volume.log all have SMART information. Volume.log also has a section on maintenance activity at the bottom. You can also find disk errors logged in system.log and kernel.log.
