RN314 - HDD failure question

Greetings,

I currently have an RN314 with 4 - 3TB Seagate HDDs, SATA 6Gb/s 64MB cache (ST3000DM001), 4+ yrs old.

NAS is giving me a “data degraded” error on the display. On the Admin page it shows only 3 drives in the GUI.  So it appears I have a drive DOA.

The HDDs are old, I can get them but they are a little pricy.  Do I need to stick with drives that are only listed in the compatiblity page or can go with newer technology 3TB HDDs?

Thanks for time and any insight?

Kevin

  • You don't need to strictly stay on the HCL.  NAS-Purposed drives (WDC Red, Seagate Ironwolf) are goot options, as are enterprise class.

I don't recommend desktop-class drives anymore (particularly 3 TB Barracudas, which have a rather poor reliability record in RAID arrays).
