RN314 4 TB external HDD showing up as 1.8 TB

FAT32 certainly won't work, it has a max volume size of 2 TB. ext shouldn't have that problem though.
Did you try NTFS? Are you formatting with the NAS or in a PC?
The HCL doesn't apply to external disks btw, only disks you insert into the array.
