rn314 memory upgrade?

Hello I have a RN314 with the standard 2gb ram I was wondering if anybody has upgraded the ram to 4gb? Did it work? I am having some sluggish syncing going on and figured the ram would help.

I upgraded the ram on ultra4 and it helped just wondering if I could do the same. Any ideas

If you download your logs, and extract the zip contents what does the log showing memory usage look like? If like in the output in the article linked to above the memory is being used for caching then a memory upgrade likely won't help much. However if your system is using lots of swap then a memory upgrade (though unsupported) may make a big difference.

What does your initrd.log look like?

I agree that you should definitely run the memory test (at least for a few passes) before trusting memory upgrades. Note that passing the memory test does not guarantee that the memory is good and compatible, it just indicates that it is likely to be. However failing the memory test would indicate that the memory is incompatible or bad.

On the 314 the memory test progress should display on the display on the front. If not, hook up a display via HDMI and you should see more detailed progress.

Note the 314 and 312 use the same CPU so I expect they probably use the same memory. Upgrading the memory on the 314 would involve a similar level of difficulty to the 312. The 316 is harder, but still doable.
  • I performed the 2GB --> 4GB RAM upgrade on my 314 last night using the G.Skill module with 9-9-9-24 timing etc. that was recommended elsewhere.

The 314 is noticeably more responsive. Navigating through Plex on my TV is much improved. Even clicking through the tabs on the web GUI takes place without that slight lag. The RAM upgrade was well worth it — just like it's been going all the way back to my NV+. Wish Netgear shipped these with max RAM by default.

I'm running the Memory Test from the Boot Menu now. I have an HDMI cable plugged into the RN314 and routed to the TV via my receiver (a Denon 3311CI), but the TV is not showing any readout (in fact, it says, "No signal"). Is monitor-oriented HDMI somehow different from TV-oriented HDMI? I should've thought that HDMI video signals were all the same.

EDIT: I've just plugged a longer HDMI cable directly into my TV. Still no display ("No signal"). Is the HDMI port even activated on these units?
  • I have my 312 hooked up to a panasonic TV via HDMI right now without issue, running the memory test. Maybe you need to toggle the TVs input to suit the hdmi port you are using?
  • I've tried every permutation with two different HDMI cables. No joy. The TV recognizes when the cable is plugged in, but it can't find a video signal after searching for one.

I have a Samsung UND8000 55", so there's a fairly straightforward protocol: Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the computer's (or the NAS in this case) HDMI output and the other end into the HDMI1/DVI input on the TV. Then assign the HDMI1/DVI input the "PC" label on the TV. But that doesn't work.

I'm so, so tired of troubleshooting this 314. I've wasted dozens of hours trying to make use of its basic functionality. My assumption is that the HDMI port on the 314 is faulty, because I haven't been able to view an output signal since day one.

nsne, can you send me your logs?

I will once the Memory Test completes. It's 80% along with pass 3 after 7.5 hours.
  • Uh, how many passes does the Memory Test do? I'm on pass 5 now after 11 hours and it doesn't look like it has any intention of stopping by itself. But there doesn't seem to be a way to power off nicely; I'd have to hold the power button to shut down.

EDIT: The Memory Test was reaching hour 12 at 60+% through pass 5, so I did a hard shut down. The unit booted without incident, so I assume that was okay. Also, I was able to bring up the HDMI display once the unit booted. That doesn't do me much good now that the memtest has run, but at least I know the HDMI port isn't faulty.
