The proftpd package used in the ReadyNAS doesn't set maxclients, so as far as the NAS is concerned there is no connection limit.
Are you getting an error message (normally 530) that says you've hit the max number of connections, or are you just getting a connection failure?
How many passive ports have you set up in the NAS? How many are you forwarding in the router?
Generally I suggest 4 passive ports per simultaneous user, though I don't know if that would apply to MountainDuck or not.
