Dear Netgear Community. I originally said the Firmware version on the NAS experiencing the problem was 6.9.2, but, I have confirmed since then that it is actually 6.9.4. We have several customer offices using the RN422 and they all run Ver6.9.2, except for one of our customer’s RN422, which uses 6.9.4, and that’s the one the problem accessing the NAS is occurring.
Since 6.9.2 has been stable at all the offices we are using it, we feel it might be safer to downgrade the Ver 6.9.4 NAS to Ver 6.9.2, rather than upgrading to the unknown (for us) Ver 6.9.5 (and easier to convince our Ver 6.9.4 customer to downgrade to conform to the other office’s versions).
I would like to confirm, is it possible to downgrade from 6.9.4 to 6.9.2, and, is the 6.9.2 generally stable to use? I looked at the release notes for the various versions, and it seems that 6.9.4 was particularly problematic, but that 6.9.2 was ok. Does anyone have any experience with 6.9.2 or any advice on this? Other than one "sandbox" NAS I have, I am never a first adoper of firmware updates. I, too, stuck with 6.9.2 for a while, since I saw problems reported here on 6.9.3 and 6.9.4. I finally switched to 6.9.5 ten months ago when it seemed stable (which was after a couple of "hot fixes" for it, I believe). Here is the tail end of my update log so you can see how careful I am:
- [2018/01/30 01:35:38 UTC] Updated from ReadyNASOS 6.8.1 (ReadyNASOS) to 6.9.2 (ReadyNASOS).
- [2019/03/09 18:24:39 UTC] Updated from ReadyNASOS 6.9.2 (ReadyNASOS) to 6.9.5 (ReadyNASOS).
This is on an RN4200V2 converted to OS6, which is a 12-bay rack-mount system that is very similar to your 4220 (it's the last rack mount of the OS4.2.x family and yours the first of the 6.x). Of course, I don't run AV on it either, since I have control over everything that goes on it.
The only downgrade warning for 6.9.4 is Devices updated with 6.9.5 firmware should not be downgraded to firmware versions before 6.9.0, so go whichever makes you more comfortable.

Netgear's firmware release notes generally says that 6.y.z can be downgraded to 6.y.0, but that you shouldn't go further back than that.
Personally I'd go with at least 6.9.5. I recall having some issues myself with some of the older 6.9 releases.
If you use gmail for email alerts, or if you use the OneDrive feature of the NAS, you might consider 6.9.6 ( https://kb.netgear.com/000061331/ReadyNAS-OS-6-Software-Version-6-9-6-Long-term-support-version-of-6-10-2 )
FWIW, I upgrade firmware more aggressively than Sandshark. But I don't grab it right away. And I start by putting it on a backup NAS, and upgrade the main NAS after a week or so. Also, it's helpful to look here for issues before upgrading.

Hi Stephen. Thanks for your advice. We successfully downgraded our test NAS from 6.9.4 to 6.9.2 over the weekend. We are going to let it run now to make sure there are no issues before performing it on our customer's NAS. Regards
