RN516 and control of attached APC UPS.

Using ReadyNAS RN516 with 6 4TB discs in RAID10 configuration.
Connected APC UPS (CS650 400w), which was auto found by ReadyNAS.
Details of UPS via Admin page came up in both
<System> <Power> <UPS> and
<System> <Performance> <Status>.

How can I access the sort of information and control that is normally
available via 'PowerChute', when the UPS is connected to a PC?

I have applied 'Enable Network Monitoring of attached UPS' (tick box)
under "UPS settings" from <System> <Power> <UPS>.
Trying to load 'PowerChute' on a PC on the network failed.

Help required to monitor and change details of UPS configuration,
either from within the ReadyNAS admin page or a PC.

Isn't it always on charge (when the mains is okay), as in trickle charge. My old UPS is!
    I'd think so.

Why would you want shutdown if the mains are ok?

A test that often is recommended is to hookup the NAS power to mains, but connect the UPS via USB. That way you can see when the UPS sends the shutdown signal to the NAS but it will remain on otherwise (unless you have a power failure, of course). Useful for testing.
  • As the information on how the ReadyNAS interacts with the UPS does not seem available, I have finally got round to doing some initial tests this morning.
Yesterday I got my Email setup (and works) and alerts set for everything.
My UPS settings are for the ‘shutdown threshold’ of 80%.

07:35 Power off the UPC results in "System: UPS is on battery power" in the logs (Admin page => System => Logs)
07:40 The logs show "System: UPS battery is low. System is going to shutdown soon.
THAT'S IT. The system did shutdown within a minute or so, BUT nothing else in the log.

08:30 Power on to UPC and waited for the ReadyNAS to restart by itself for 1 hour and 20 minutes.
09:50 Power on the ReadyNAS by pressing power on button.
The logs show 3 entries: -
09:50 ReadyNAS service or process restarted
    09:51 Background service started
09:51 UPS battery is low. System is going to shutdown soon.
On logging in after ‘forced’ restart of ReadyNAS, the UPC Status was shown as under 80% and the indicator was red (Admin page => System => Performance).
Later on it turned green at the 80% level.

    Some questions.
1 The last message in the logs before actual shutdown is the system is about to ‘shutdown soon’. There is no actual shutdown message.
2 Why were no alerts triggered at all. No Emails were sent.
3 Should the ReadyNAS system automatically restart without intervention. It didn’t after 80 mins. Was this long enough?
4 Should an Email be sent on ReadyNAS start up.
5 After the ReadyNAS system was forcible restarted the ‘Battery low and system down warning came up’. Surely with power to the UPS there is no way the UPS is going to turn off the ReadNAS. Message should just be ‘Battery low and power is restored’ or similar.
6 After the ReadyNAS UPS status changed from red to green there was no indication in the logs.
7 Over 2 hrs after the last message at 09:51, the system is up and running and happy. The last message says the system is going to shutdown soon, which is obviously not so.
8 Very minor point – The logs could do with using prefix of ‘0’ for time before 10:00 for consistency. i.e. 09:51 not 9:51.

  • In looking at another forum I discovered that there is a 'program' called APCUPSD.
Version 3.14.13 has been released on 2nd February 2015. http://apcupsd.com/
This is an APC UPS Daemon, specifically for a UPS made by APC.

The question is .... has anybody used this on a ReadyNAS, and if so how is it install?

I don't see a linux version, just windows and OSX.

My sincere apologies everyone... I was so excited at the possibilities that I neglected the obvious ... sorry :?

Got me curious, so did some googling... POSSIBLE you might be able to get excited again:

Linked to the manual from the first link I gave... and here's the section regarding operating system specifics in the manual:

    http://www.apcupsd.com/manual/manual.html#operating-system-specifics
  • Further googling leads to posts on the Synology forum showing how to install it on their systems (dating back to 2009). Would think something similar would work with a ReadyNAS.
