While many of us prefer matching drives in a set (same mfg and model), most times other than a brand new situation or where money is not a limiting factor, this is not possible. You can successfully mix and match any drives that are on the HCL. In the 5 years I have had a ReadyNAS (various models) only for about two of those years have I had matching sets of drives. Initially it was because I only had two drives in my NV+ (v1) and the second time when I had a new NVX added. Currently I have two 5400 RPM 3TB Hitachi drives and two 7200 RPM 1TB Seagate drives and they have played nicely together for the last year.
I see absolutely nothing to critique about your decision. Just do make sure the 7K3000 drives are ones that are on the HCL.
