RNDP400U want to run 4 separate volumes, no RAID
I've got several HDDs that are various ages & sizes, that I don't really want to join into a RAID array.
I just want to access them as separate volumes.
If I put the drives into the ReadyNAS, are they going to be blank formatted? Can I just access them as 4 separate volumes without any RAID array whatsoever?
Like: can I host the hard drives in the NAS one day, and pull them out and install them into a PC another day, without any data being erased or changed into RAID-only access or otherwise changed by the NAS?
Some of them might be NTFS and some might be FAT-32, I don't remember. I just want to stick them into the NAS box and put the NAS box by the DSL router and access any of them over the network. That's it.

You can do most of what you want with the flexraid mode. The NAS will need to format your disks - if you are using 4.2.x firmware, you can find instructions in the manual here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RNDU2000/ReadyNAS_Home_RAID4.2SW_en_29-Sep-11.pdf
Your NAS can also be switched to OS 6, and since you need to do a factory reset anyway you might want to consider doing that.

No. The NAS uses a linux file system (ext with 4.2 firmware, btrfs with 6.x firmware). Windows doesn't support either.
You can create four volumes (one per disk) with various network shares on the NAS. But the NAS software isn't designed to let you insert/remove hard drives as if they were optical disks.
