RNDU4000 after update from FW4 to FW6 extremely slow - any suggestions/solutions?

Hi All, I´m new here and would really appreciate your help and maybe some hints.

Got me a used Netgear RNDU4000 (ReadyNAS Ultra 4) from a friend with FW4.2.31 installed.
After reading a bit I thought it would be a smart idea, to pimp the untit and upgrade to FW6 for better performance and more options.
Followed this: https://blah.cloud/just-for-fun/upgrading-a-legacy-readynas-from-raidiator-4-2-x-to-6-2-x/
ran PREP4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin
then R4toR6_6.9.5.bin
and then updated online to current OS V6.10.5.
Happily restarted BUT:

The unit is extremely SLOW now, admin web interface takes ages to load and the re-sync of the 4 HDDs with 1.5TB each was about 1% after several hours... this was very much faster with old FW 4.2.
Made two factory resets and a downgrade to V6.10.3 but no change- it is unusable slow now.
I guess I turned the Netgear into an Notgear :-(

My questions:

1. is this behaviour to be expected?

2. would it be helpful to go back to FW 6.9.x somwehow?

3. Looking for a solution I was reading somewhere that member Sandshark said: The new firmware requires more memory. Can this confirm someone ?

4: Does G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Memory F2-6400CL5D-4GBNT fit and solve the problem?

5. Does someone know a link from Netgear for a list of compatible RAM for RNDU4000?

6. any way to go back to FW 4.x instead of throwing it into the trash at least?

Has the resync process finished now?  The NAS will be very slow during the resync, but should pick up speed afterwards.

Normally I'd expect a 4x1.5 TB resync to complete fairly quickly (it will take hours, but not days).

One possibility is that one of the disks is beginning to fail.  It'd be useful to download the log zip file from the admin web ui and look at smart stats in disk_info.log.

We do recommend more memory here, as folks have run into out-of-memory conditions on their NAS.

However, the G.SKILL won't work on an ultra 4.  It has only one memory slot, and it is 200-Pin.  A single 2 GB module of 200-Pin DDR2 SODIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) should work (doubling your current RAM).

You can open the chassis and look at the current RAM module, and google its specs (powering down of course).  But wait for the resync to finish.

You can revert, but I think something is wrong - and needs to be sorted out.

The Ultra and Pro 4 aren't especially particular with the memory they use.  I think I used A-Tech the last time I upgraded one.  2GB is the max you can use, with the specs StephenB gave.  I find an updated Ultra4 to be about as fast as a 100 series.  Not a speed demon, but very usable.  I wouldn't recommend running much in the way of apps on one, though.

Thank you both for fast reply. Good to know to be not alone with this stuff ... :-)

        Fast organized a 2 GB 200-Pin DDR2 SODIMM DDR2 667 2Rx8 module from a friend for testing.

I interrupted resync process, installed the 2GB (only one module possible)  instead of 1 GB and started over.

Resync process states 60% @ 4x 1.5 TB physical HDD after approx. 6 hours since restart.

Cannot confirm that resync speeded up really but seems to be that the admin interface keeps alive now. Before doubling the RAM it happend to be that the admin page was not reacheable any more and  "raidar" was unable to find the NAS after a while.

This really caused some frustration to me - but now waiting patiently to finish re-sync. Should be done tomorrow morning. Will see if system is still online ... and have a look at the mentioned report of the disk status. I´ve low level formatted all of them an run chkdsk before installing them to the RNDU4000 so I don´t believe that the disks are faulty somehow.

        Will report ...
